Rhinoplasty / Nose Surgery

Nose is a central feature of your face and its shape, symmetry and position has a huge impact on your overall looks. Rhinoplasty or nose surgery is often done for correcting nose shape, reducing or increasing its size or changing its angle or changing shape or angle of tip of nose bridge . Rhinoplasty is also done for the functional problems of the nose like difficulty in breathing from one side of the nose or deviated septum of the nose. Your surgeon will determine if you require a soft treatment or surgical option that is more suitable for you.
Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries as well as it is the most critical and creative procedure in plastic surgery. The Surgeon needs to possess precise surgical technical expertise as well as in-depth knowledge of nose anatomy.
Is rhinoplasty right for me?
If you are suffering from any breathing problems or if you are unhappy with the structure/shape of your nose, then rhinoplasty might serve as the best solution for you. You may choose to increase or reduce the size/shape of the nose including nostrils, bridge or tip. ‘Aesthetic nose surgery’ is focused on improving the contour of the nose and giving it better proportions or definition. ‘Corrective nose surgery’ is done to fix breathing problems. Overall the surgery can correct the following defects:
  • Correct the symmetry, size and shape of the nose.
  • Straighten a crooked/deviated nose.
  • Alter the appearance as per your desire (alteration in share or size) and improve your appearance
  • Repair damage done by injury/accident
  • Fix breathing obstructions by widening nasal passage
  • Improve other functional issues
During your initial consultation, your surgeon will assess your condition and plan the treatment that is best suited to you.
What happens during surgery?
The surgery is performed under a general anesthesia ; you will not feel any pain during the procedure.
There are two techniques available: an open or closed surgical technique. In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nostrils, thus minimizing visible scarring but limiting surgical access. In open technique, incision is made at the bottom of the nostril and inside the nostril, thus giving full access to the nose, necessary for precision work. Choice of technique depends on your requirement and the extent of your surgery.
First your surgeon will make a small incision and carefully separate the skin of your nose from the bone and cartilage, before sculpting it to your desired size and shape.
Once the surgeon is satisfied with the results, a splint will be placed over the bridge of your nose.
The whole procedure generally takes around 2-4 hours depending upon the extent of the problem.
Both techniques leave minimal to no scarring and these incisions heal well.
Rhinoplasty post-operative care and recovery
You may experience pain, headaches and feel very congested for a day or two. Depending on the type of rhinoplasty, you may find splint or cast taped to your nose.
Avoid smoking and do not engage in sports and heavy exercise for two weeks.
Slight bleeding, numbness is common along with bruising under eyes after surgery.
Most people are able to resume normal social activities within two to three weeks.
