Otoplasty Surgery

Ears are one of the prominent features of one’s face and some people have unusual and undesirable shapes of ear affecting their overall appearance.
Ear correction surgery or otoplasty is a type of cosmetic surgery designed for correcting unusual ears by reshaping or reducing the size of ears and making them more symmetrical and proportionate. Often ear folds are underdeveloped or ear sticks out too far from the side of the head. Various methods are available for correcting these deformities as per patients’ needs and severity of their condition.
Who needs otoplasty surgery?
The aim of otoplasty is to reduce the prominence of the ears and enhance contour of your ears. This surgery can be performed in both children and adults. Most commonly, patients with prominent ears have concern with their appearance and this corrective surgery is often done in both children and adults to avoid bullying. This is a procedure that can be performed on children as young as 5 years old. If you are concerned about deformed shape of your ear or your child’s ear, otoplasty is a relatively uncomplicated procedure worth considering.
Surgical Approach:
Before surgery
Patient’s detailed medical history and tests will be done for assessing the health status. Our surgeon will discuss all the surgical options, ear problems and possible corrections that can be managed with each patient.
At La Midas, our plastic surgeon will carefully assess problems associated with shapes and sizes of your ears to establish a tailored surgery plan for you. We encourage you to discuss your goals and expectations from the surgery.
We will show before and after photographs of patients to understand the outcome of surgery. Our surgeon will also discuss risks and complications.
During surgery:
The surgery can be performed under general or local anesthetic. The surgery involves correcting each of the deformities by either cutting the cartilage to set it back or suturing the cartilage without making any incision.
The first method involves making a small incision behind the ear at the skin’s fold against the head. Our plastic surgeon might use multiple techniques to trim, reshape or contour the cartilage. Excess skin and cartilage is removed, and the ear is reattached. As a final step, the surgeon will use sutures to anchor the ear to the desired position.
In some cases, no skin or cartilage is removed and ears are simply stitched to skin to correct the defect. In this procedure, there is no need to make incisions and the recovery period is very short.
If someone is suffering from a shape or size issue of only one ear, both ears may be altered in order to ensure symmetry after the discussion with the patient.
The surgery usually takes about 2-2.5 hours and the patient may be sent home the same day after anesthesia wears off.
What to expect after ear surgery?
Our surgeon will provide each patient with instructions on how to care for yourself or your child during the recovery period. The scar is usually invisible and will be hidden by hair.
Common side-effects that can be associated with this aesthetic surgery will be mild pain and discomfort. This can be managed by over-the-counter pain medications. Swelling and bruising is mild and will resolve in 1-2 weeks.
Risks involved with otoplasty are minimal. It is recommended to choose an experienced cosmetic surgeon to avoid risk of infection, bleeding, or suture-related complications.
What is the recovery period?
Most people are back at work a few days after surgery. Normal activities can usually be resumed after one week. Most patients will also be wearing a headband while the ear cartilage is settling into its new form. Doctors will suggest you to avoid strenuous activity and exercise for at least 3-4 weeks.
La Midas is one of the cosmetic surgery clinics that provide the otoplasty. Our doctors will explain the details of surgery and all of the information about the procedure patients have selected. Our team is qualified and experienced in the latest techniques and technology.
