Hymenoplasty, also known as hymenorrhaphy, is the cosmetic repair, restoration, or construction of a woman’s hymen also known as revirginization.
The hymen is a thin layer of tissue that encloses the vaginal area. The hymen can easily break in many situations other than intercourse, be it vigorous activities like exercises or swimming, the insertion of tampons, or even during regular pap smears. Many women may not even be aware that their hymen has torn, as there may be little to no blood loss or pain. This surgery is a simple procedure that will repair a torn hymen or build a hymen that is not present.
Who is the right candidate?
Hymenoplasty is a cosmetic fix for women who may wish to repair or reconstruct their hymen. Their reasons can be physical or cultural or psychological for undergoing this surgery.
How does a Hymen Repair/Restoration procedure work?
The surgery normally takes less than one hour under local anesthesia. Our surgeon will stitch together the pieces allowing the hymen to grow back together as it heals. In women who have no fragments of the hymen remaining or born without a hymen, the plastic surgeon will tighten the vaginal entrance and use a small portion of the vaginal tissue to create a new hymen which is very similar to the natural hymen.
Post-surgery care and recovery:
After the surgery, you will need to gently wash the area with soap and water regularly. There will be slight swelling and bruising with minute pain which will last for only a week. You will receive a prescription for painkillers and antibiotics to prevent infection.
There should not be any vaginal insertion until the incisions heal completely and prevent the new hymen from breaking. You should also avoid any heavy lifting and any vigorous activities as this may negatively affect your healing. The sutures will dissolve and come out on their own.
You should be able to return to work the day after undergoing hymen repair. Light exercise is recommended after a week of the surgery.
What are the risks and complications?
Every operation has risks and potential complications. Fortunately, the vast majority of our patients have no problems with their surgery and are extremely happy with their results. Risks are rare which include infection, bleeding, scarring, pain with intercourse, and deformity. Also, the amount of bleeding upon first intercourse following surgery cannot be predicted. However, most patients never experience these risks, as they are quite rare.

What should you expect after Hymen Repair/Restoration Surgery?
Six weeks after surgery, your hymen will be healed and restored. The first time most of our hymen repair patients engage in intercourse following the surgery, the hymen will break as expected with a natural hymen. There are usually no signs of having had a hymen repair surgery. It is important to understand that the bleeding associated with the tearing of the surgically produced hymen is just as unpredictable as it is with a natural hymen.
At La Midas Clinic, our doctors , with absolute discretion and confidentiality, perform this procedure to ensure that it will repair and restore the hymen.
