Dermal Fillers

The major structural components of our face are skin, fat, muscle, and bone. With age, there is a volume loss in these structures which directly contribute to the visible signs of aging.
With age, bone loss in the face can lead to retraction of the jawline, descent of the nose, and loss of full cheekbones. The facial muscles may also decrease in volume and elasticity, and deflation and movement of facial fat further accelerate the signs of aging. Finally, the skin stretches and loses its elasticity with the loss of framework provided by fat, muscle, and bone, which leads to many familiar signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin, etc.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are soft, gel-like substances, an injectable treatment performed in a doctor’s office, can be very helpful in those with early signs of aging, or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery.
Type of fillers and their effects
Dermal fillers can be composed of a variety of substances both naturally and synthetically made. One of the most common is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin which helps in keeping skin hydrated and gives skin a plump. HA fillers can last from six months to much longer before being gradually absorbed by the body depending on their specific chemical preparation. Apart from natural appearance, they can be dissolved in case of an adverse effect, or if the person dislikes the appearance. Mostly, HA fillers are premixed with lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, to help in treating the patient comfortably. HA injections may stimulate collagen production, leading to a fresh-looking skin in the long run.
Other available dermal fillers like those made from calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and fat that is transplanted from another part of your body. Calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral-like compound found in human bones has been used in dentistry and reconstructive plastic surgery. Poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic filler helps to stimulate collagen production and is different from other fillers as its results are steady; as it instigates the body to produce collagen. Synthetic fillers generally last longer, as they are not absorbed by the body, hence they are a great option. Fat injections generally last indefinitely. Each of these substances has a unique density, longevity, and texture, which means a material may be suited to a specific area of the face giving expected results.
During the procedure
Generally, the denser and deeper the product is injected, the longer it lasts, although this varies for each patient. Initially, our cosmetic surgeon may assess the area to be treated and then inject the required filler after discussion with the patient. Later our cosmetic surgeon will simply repeat treatment, adjusting the amount and techniques as necessary to maintain your results.
After the procedure
You can do normal activities right after treatment, but our cosmetic surgeon may ask you to avoid massage and over action your facial muscles for a day.
Dental treatment requires pressure and stretching of the face that could potentially misplace fillers. It is advisable to wait for a few days.
Risks and complications
Though fillers are safe, there are a few reasons where they should be avoided or delayed like during pregnancy, breastfeeding, dental treatment, or suffering from any infection, as it may spread from any of the facial areas to the injection site.
Final results in the hands of an expert
The choice of the right type of dermal filler should be done under the supervision of an experienced, cosmetic surgeon or certified injector with an in-depth understanding of facial anatomy, and knowledge of the variety of available fillers and their respective injection techniques.
