Dermal fillers (soft tissue fillers) are liquid substances injected underneath the skin surface to add fullness and volume.
Filler substances include calcium hydroxylapatite, hyaluronic acid, polyalkylimide, polylactic acid and polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA). Among these, we mostly use hyaluronic acid in filling forehead lines, lifting eyebrows and correcting nasolabial folds.
Disease
You can opt for fillers to add volume to your skin if you have one or more of the following skin concerns:
  • Forehead wrinkles
    • Static wrinkles
These are noticed when your face is relaxed and at rest. As you age, your skin’s dermal layer goes thinner. The loss of its elasticity and fullness causes static wrinkles.
    • Dynamic wrinkles
These may develop too but not fade when your face relaxes. Dermal fillers help to remove wrinkles by improving the fullness of the dermal layer. Filling up the tissue, it appears more youthful. Through this procedure, the creases are removed.
  • Eyebrow wrinkles and drooping
Your skin loses elasticity and strength as you age and produces lower levels of collagen and elastin. This may lead to wrinkles between your eyebrows and sagging skin beneath them. Repetitive facial movements like frowning may also cause brow wrinkles.
  • Nasolabial folds
Nasolabial folds or smile lines are the lines which run from the sides of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Such folds are caused by sagging down of the subcutaneous fat tissue from your cheekbone as you age. This provides additional volume to your cheek which begins hanging over your nasolabial fold, that results it in becoming deeper.
Diagnosis
  • For forehead lines
The ingredient of the dermal filler (hyaluronic acid popularly used) plumps out in the area injected, where the wrinkles keep occurring. It enables the absorption of water by your skin, giving it a plumper look. It may often take weeks for the filler to get metabolized. Throughout the time, the skin keeps getting smoothed while your filler stimulates. During this process, your skin starts producing natural collagen.
  • For eyebrow lift
Certain muscles hold your eyebrows down, mainly orbicularis oculi around the eye. An injection of Botox into these muscles releases the eyebrows from the downward pulls. Secondly, a filler is injected below an eyebrow to provide support to it and elevate it. Thirdly, a filler injected above the brow and towards your temple can help to add volume and to pull the brow upwards.
  • For nasolabial folds
The amount of filler used depends on the depth of your nasolabial folds. Injections of measured quantities of fillers into the treatment areas of the face can help the face to regain substance. The hyaluronic acid filler is injected right underneath the folds. This instantly restores and rejuvenates the skin and helps your volume and contours to return.
Types
The most common types of fillers we use are:
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse)
This mineral-like ingredient is naturally present in your bones. It can treat nasolabial folds, frown lines, marionette lines among others.
  • Hyaluronic acid (mainly Juvederm and Restylane)
Again found naturally in your body, we use it most commonly to treat forehead wrinkles, frown lines, Crow’s feet, nasolabial furrows, etc.
  • Polyalkylimide (Aquamid)
It’s a biocompatible semi-permanent filler which can treat depressed scars and nasolabial folds, enhance thin lips, cheekbones and jawline, etc.

  • Polylactic acid (Sculptra)
This kind of synthetic dermal filler (stimulator) can stimulate collagen production. It’s especially used to treat the lower facial structure including nasolabial folds, thin lips, etc.
  • Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA)
This semi-permanent filler can treat deep folds (mainly nasolabial) and used instead of hyaluronic therapy or collagen replacement if you need a more permanent result.
