A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing treatment where we apply a chemical solution to your skin to remove the affected top layers. Here is everything you need to know about chemical peel therapy.

We use a chemical peel to treat a variety of skin problems like:

  • Freckles, age spots, dark patches (melasma) because of pregnancy or having birth control pills
    • Diagnosis
    Before the procedure, you will discuss with our skincare specialist regarding the best peel option as per your requirement. He will give you the details of the particular peel you need and will ask about things (like whether you received acne medication) which might interfere with your peel. Before the treatment, our doctor will clean your face. He may cover your eyes with goggles, tape, gauze or ointment and may also protect the hair.
    You might require a painkiller or sedative before a medium chemical peel. Before a deep chemical peel, we may numb your skin using a local anaesthetic or provide a sedative.
    Types
    • Light chemical peel
      It’s a superficial chemical peel that removes the epidermis (outer skin layer). We can use it for treating acne, fine wrinkles, dryness and uneven skin tone. We might recommend a light chemical peel every 2-5 weeks based on your wished results.
      During a light chemical peel:
      1. Our doctor will apply a chemical solution of salicylic acid or glycolic acid with a sponge, gauze, cotton ball or brush. Your treated skin will start whitening.
      2. You may feel mild stinging while our chemical solution is on the skin.
      3. Our doctor will wash or apply a neutralizing solution for removing the chemical solution from your skin.
    • Medium chemical peel
      It removes skin cells from your epidermis and portions of the upper-middle layer of your skin (dermis). Our medium chemical peels can treat uneven skin tone, acne scars and wrinkles. you may repeat the peel after 3-9 months for maintaining results.
      During a medium chemical peel:
      1. Our doctor will apply a chemical solution of trichloroacetic acid (sometimes combined with glycolic acid) with a gauze or a cotton-tipped applicator. Your treated skin will start whitening.
      2. After some time, he will apply cool compresses for soothing your treated skin. We may also give you a hand-held fan for cooling your skin. No neutralizing solution is required.
      3. You may feel stinging and/or burning for about 20 minutes.

    • Deep chemical peel
      It removes skin cells from your epidermis and parts of your middle to lower dermal layer. Our expert may recommend you this kind of peel if you have precancerous growths, deeper scars or wrinkles. We will perform this peel only once.
      During a deep chemical peel:
      1. We will give you IV (intravenous) fluids and monitor your heart rate closely.
      2. Our doctor will apply phenol (carbolic acid) on your skin using a cotton-tipped applicator. Your treated skin will start turning grey or white.
      3. Our doctor, for limiting your exposure to phenol, will do the treatment in parts with about 15-minute intervals. A procedure for your full facial may need about 90 minutes.

    If you get a chemical peel treatment at La Midas, we recommend the following:
    • If you previously had herpes infections surrounding the mouth, our doctor may prescribe you an antiviral medication pre and post-therapy for preventing a viral infection.
    • If we give you a light or medium peel, use a retinoid cream like tretinoin (Retin-A, Renova, etc.) beforehand for shortening the therapy time and speeding your healing.
    • Use a retinoid cream and a bleaching agent (hydroquinone) pre or post-therapy for preventing skin darkening.
    • Use sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure at least 4 weeks pre-treatment and a few days post-treatment for preventing uneven pigmentation in treated sites.
    • A week pre-treatment, stop using hair-removal products and waxing. Avoid facial scrubs, massages or bleaching in the week pre-therapy.
