Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery for enhancement of size, shape and overall appearance of women’s breasts. It is most commonly performed on women with smaller breasts for adding volume and/or symmetry. Many women lose volume or shape of breasts as a part of the aging process. Breast augmentation can help all of these women with fuller and more youthful looking breasts.
There are two techniques; fat transfer and use of implants as discussed below:
Fat transfer technique
Fat transfer is best suited for individuals who do not want any scar on their breast and has adequate amounts of fat deposits in their bodies and are ready for a staged procedure. The process involves extracting excess fat from donor sites and re-injection in the breast area under anaesthesia.
Types of implants
Implants are made of silicone outer shell filled with either silicone gel material or sterile saline solution. Both materials have their own advantages. The greatest advantage to the saline implant is that in case of a leak, the saline inside will be safely absorbed by the body. Saline solution offers a more natural feel. Medical-grade silicone gel gives more firmness and adheres to its shape in case of rupture thus avoiding spreading throughout the body.
What happens during breast augmentation surgery using implants?
The procedure involves placing implants under or over a chest muscle, which can be inserted through a few places, most commonly the inframammary crease.
Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia.
First your surgeon will make a small incision and create space for implants by lifting breast tissue/wall. This space is created behind the breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle.
Implant is placed carefully beneath the nipple area using dual-plane or other similar technique. The upper portion of the implant is covered by layers of muscle, tissue and skin.
After the implant is positioned, the incisions will be closed and bandaged. Bandages, dressing and draining tubes are used in the healing phase.
Result is a natural looking breast with the desired symmetrical and aesthetic effect.
Breast augmentation after-care and recovery
To achieve optimal results, great care must be taken during recovery including care for surgical sites, and dressing. You need to avoid heavy activities of all sorts during the healing phase. Your doctor will advise you on how to manage the discomfort with pain medication and also you will need to wear a surgical support bra for a few weeks.
Do breast implants last for a lifetime?
Most implants last for 10 years without causing any side effects and will eventually require replacements or may need a breast lift in addition to replacement.
Risk and complications
Breast enlargement is a relatively safe process and possible risks are associated with surgery and procedure. Some of the complications that may occur include breast pain, changes in sensation around breast area, capsular contracture, (occurs if the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten), scarring or infection. Some of these symptoms usually disappear within time and some require special treatment. During your initial consultation, the surgeon will give you an in-depth explanation of all the risks and complications associated with the procedure.
One of the most important decisions in this process is selecting a qualified surgeon with significant experience performing the procedure. Choosing the right surgeon will significantly lower your risk for complications and produce the best outcome and desired look .
